Head of Secondary Simon Oakley discusses the importance of well-being and stability during the Secondary School yearsHow does DBIS approach well-being in the Secondary phase?
Well-being lies at the heart of the DBIS Secondary School approach. Throughout their Secondary School life, DBIS students are provided with reliable information which deepens their understanding of the choices they may face both in- and outside of school. Our approach provides students with the intellectual skills required to reflect critically on these choices and on the influences that society brings to bear on them, including peer pressure, advertising, social media, and family and cultural values.
How does emotional and academic stability influence students’ success?
At DBIS, we understand that there is a direct link between well-being and academic achievement. Our pedagogical approach recognises that this flows both ways – neither can be achieved without the other. Strong, supportive relationships with teaching staff and DBIS’ dedicated well-being specialists provide students with the emotional resources they need to step out of their intellectual ‘comfort zone’ and explore new ideas and ways of thinking. This is fundamental to educational achievement.
Our sustained academic excellence across IGCSEs and A Levels is testament to the positive, well-informed choices our learners make and the self-regulation and self-management strategies they display.
Why is the choice of Secondary School so crucial for students’ well-being and emotional development?
At DBIS, we believe schools have an essential role to play in supporting students to make healthy lifestyle choices and to understand the effects of those choices on their health and well-being. Secondary School is a critical period in the development of long-term attitudes towards personal well-being and lifestyle. The social and emotional skills, knowledge and behaviours that young people learn at DBIS help them build resilience and set the pattern for how they will manage their physical and mental health throughout their lives.
How has DBIS supported students in facing the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic?
In recent years, senior students across the globe have faced ongoing uncertainties about final examinations. Here at DBIS, our focus on well-being and stability has equipped our students with the skills they need to navigate these challenging times. This is evidenced by the growth mindset they display in their approach to learning, which is a requisite for success in the face of uncertainty and setbacks.
DBIS’ small class sizes and emphasis on tailored learning journeys have been instrumental in providing students with continued excellence in teaching, despite the limitations imposed by the global pandemic. Our teachers ensure that students are empowered to take ownership of their learning, thereby helping them to remain engaged, motivated and able to find solutions when faced with challenges.
DBIS is now in its 40th year – why do you think it is so popular with students and parents?
DBIS is unique among international schools in Hong Kong. First, there’s our location. We’re incredibly lucky to be situated in the beautiful district of Discovery Bay, with mountains, greenery and beaches right on our doorstep – the perfect environment for experiential learning. Then there’s the fact that students can stay with us from Nursery right through to Year 13. The stability and sense of belonging that offers them is immense. DBIS is at the heart of the Discovery Bay community; it’s a warm and welcoming place to learn and grow. Our students are supported and nurtured every step of the way, and that holistic approach is what makes the school so special.
