Ladies Recreation Club
Louisa Coxon and 18 friends wrote a letter to the acting colonial secretary asking “for a small piece of land for the purpose of health and recreation” in 1883. Little did they know the Ladies Recreation Club would become one of the most sought-after sports and recreation clubs in Hong Kong. And on prime real estate too.
Membership was originally women only, almost as a reaction to male only clubs such as the Hong Kong Club. But membership is now also open to men and children of all nationalities.
Facilities: Tennis, badminton and squash courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools with diving boards. Library, fitness centre, five-star spa, food and beverage outlets. Tenpin bowling.
Entrance and membership fees: Available upon request at membership@lrc.com.hk
Top tip: You’ll most likely need to be sponsored by four other members of the club to gain admission – so make a few member friends if you want to join
Did you know: Louisa Coxon, one of the main drivers behind the establishment of the LRC was the wife of Belgian foreign consul Attwell Coxon. She was unconventionally athletic, preferring to drive her own pony cart instead of travelling by sedan as many ladies of the time did. No surprise that she successfully pushed for the founding of a women’s recreation club
