From packing your boxes to tackling language barriers, you will appreciate these top tips that will make your move easierIn collaboration with Crown Relocations
Are you relocating soon? With an endless list of things to do, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Whether you are going away for work, with your kids or planning a happy retirement, check out our top ten relocation hacks designed to take the stress out of an international move.
1. To get a head start on your relocation, check out expatriate forums to seek advice and talk to fellow expatriates – even better visit your new country in advance! Getting a taste of life abroad and knowing what to expect can help you adjust faster to your new home.
2. If you are a pet owner, make sure your furry friends can come along on your big move. After all, they are part of the family! Check the destination regulations as early as possible as the rules vary from country to country and do further research to pick up tips to care for them during the move. A trusted pet relocation partner can also help you out.
3. Include your kids when making plans for the relocation and find a friend or family member to keep them entertained on moving day.
4. Make a “moving package” for your kids. You can load up their favourite toys, books and snacks to keep your little travellers happy; and throw in a world map to encourage them plot the journey ahead.
5. To prepare your children ahead of the move, encourage them to seek out local activities and restaurants they want to visit. Then plan your first family weekend together to give all of you something to look forward to. Lucky for you, Hong Kong has an abundance of fun things to do from country parks and beaches to trampoline parks and ice rinks – we think you will love it here!
6. Take a snapshot of your old rooms. This will allow you to create lasting memories of your past home, say goodbye and even help with planning how to set out your furniture at your new place.
7. Avoid tangled wires when packing. Thread wires from electrical items through toilet rolls, so you don’t end up getting frustrated untying knots when you arrive.
8. Use your suitcases wisely. Instead of stuffing them with clothes, pack them with heavier items as the wheels can help you transport these pieces more easily.
9. Protect your breakables by putting them in socks or wrapping them in towels and soft clothes. This can also save you from buying extra packing materials.
10. To reduce the impact of a language barrier, learn a few common greetings and expressions for giving directions and ordering food. Some useful Cantonese phrases include “nei hou”, which means hello, and “ng goi”, which translates into thank you.
