Hong Kong shines at World’s 50 Best Bar Awards 2024

Hong Kong emerged as a key player at the World’s Best Bar Awards which was held in Madrid on October 22. The standout was Bar Leone, which made a remarkable debut at No. 2 on the list, claiming the title of The Best Bar in Asia and receiving the Disaronno Highest New Entry Award. Founded by Lorenzo Antinori, Bar Leone is known for its “cocktails popolari” philosophy, which prioritises accessibility and quality, combining speed and consistency to deliver exceptional drinks that resonate with both locals and visitors.

In addition to Bar Leone, the Hong Kong bar scene is thriving with establishments like Coa, which ranked at No. 18, further solidifying the city’s reputation as a cocktail destination. This year’s awards highlight the innovative spirit of Hong Kong’s bartenders, who are adept at blending traditional techniques with modern influences, utilising local ingredients and Asian flavours to craft unique cocktails that reflect the city’s diverse cultural tapestry.

Across Asia, other notable entries include Jigger & Pony at No. 5 and new entries Nutmeg & Clove and Analogue Initiative. Other cities like Tokyo and Seoul also made their mark, with Tokyo’s Bar Benfiddich and Bangkok’s BKK Social Club gaining recognition. The accolades awarded to these bars underscore the region’s burgeoning cocktail culture, driven by a commitment to creativity, sustainability, and an unparalleled drinking experience.


Sip on Success: The Aubrey Unveils Innovative Shochu Cocktails Inspired by Kaizen

This month, we’re excited to spotlight elevated Japanese izakaya,The Aubrey, nestled on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong. The Aubrey invites cocktail enthusiasts to experience its newly unveiled menu, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, meaning ‘continuous improvement’. Recently celebrated at the Asia’s 50 Best Bars Award Ceremony, The Aubrey has impressively soared to No. 10 in the 2024 rankings, a remarkable jump of seven positions from last year. To celebrate, the bar’s mixologists have crafted a unique cocktail selection focusing on shochu, a traditional Japanese spirit that’s celebrated for its versatility and lower alcohol content. Highlights include the Glory Gimlet, which harmonises IMO Shochu with bergamot and cardamom, and the Lonely Street, a distinctive take on the Whisky Sour featuring barley shochu. Each drink reflects a commitment to creativity and tradition, showcasing unique ingredients like Hakkasu Rock liqueur and Hinoki bitters. With this new menu, The Aubrey continues to redefine the cocktail landscape, blending cultural heritage with modern mixology in an unforgettable drinking experience.

A flavorful new chapter for Thai cuisine

Samsen has opened its third location, Samsen Central, in the heart of Hong Kong, following the success of its Wan Chai and Sheung Wan outlets. Co-founders Bella Kong and Adam Cliff aim to bring a taste of Bangkok’s vibrant street food scene to the city with dishes like the Samsen Wagyu beef boat noodle soup and Khao soi curried chicken noodles. Situated just off Queen’s Road Central on On Lan Street, the restaurant features a rustic-chic design, with high ceilings and walls decorated with retro Thai graphics by artist Chris Kong.

The menu includes familiar favourites along with new offerings like a crispy oyster omelette and various stir-fries, catering to a diverse range of diners. Samsen Central will serve dinner starting October 23, 2024, operating on a walk-in basis, making it an accessible choice for those looking for quality Thai cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere.

The World’s 50 Best Bars unveils 51-100 list, featuring two Hong Kong bars

As the countdown begins to the prestigious announcement of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 on October 22 in Madrid, the extended list of bars ranked 51-100 has been released, featuring two standout entries from Hong Kong. Argo, ranked at No. 58, and new entry The Savory Project, debuting at No. 82, represent the city’s thriving cocktail scene in this globally recognised ranking.

This year’s extended list spans 35 cities and includes 12 new entries from cocktail hotspots like Singapore, London, and Madrid, as well as emerging destinations like Sri Lanka’s Hiriketiya. With 13 bars from Asia in total, Hong Kong continues to be a key player in the region’s cocktail landscape, sharing the spotlight with bars from Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok, and more.

The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024, now in its 16th edition, celebrates excellence in the global bar community, honouring innovation, creativity, and hospitality. This year’s list of 51-100 bars serves as a prelude to the main event, highlighting even more of the world’s extraordinary cocktail venues.

Watermark reopens: Harbourfront dining with spectacular views

The Landmark Mandarin Oriental hosts a ‘Toast to the Future’

Marcy’s High Seas Takes Over Frank’s New York Italian

Seafood lovers are in for a treat as Singapore’s acclaimed Marcy’s brings its culinary magic to Hong Kong for one night only. On Saturday, October 26, Chef Ryan Choo will host “Marcy’s High Seas,” a takeover at Frank’s New York Italian in Central. Known for his inventive mix of Asian, Latin American, and European flavours, Chef Ryan will present a five-course seafood menu that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Diners can look forward to highlights such as Amberjack Tiradito with Spanish Avruga Caviar, Marcy’s famous Crab Toast, and a Red Prawn Mafaldine, all ending with a Pecan Pie Sundae. The r é n FOOD+FILM Series

The r é n FOOD+FILM series is launching this month in collaboration with over 20 culinary experts from Hong Kong. This unique series invites attendees to explore the fascinating connection between cinema and cuisine, offering insights into the lives of chefs through films that hold personal and professional significance for them.

Each chef will create a dish inspired by a selected film, capturing its essence and evoking memories and emotions tied to specific moments and places. The FOOD+FILM series promises a cozy and intimate setting where guests can enjoy the chef’s culinary creation, reflecting the magic of their chosen film.

Since its inception in February 2023, r é n has aimed to create positive change through food and community engagement. Our mission is based on three core values: HUMANITY, GOODNESS, and FOOD. We design campaigns that not only generate revenue for our social enterprise but also raise awareness about the challenges faced by our beneficiaries.

The first event in the r é n FOOD+FILM series will take place on October 7 at Casa Cucina & Bar. The Hari’s autumn art lineup: Art prize and fireside chats

The Hari hotel is bringing a vibrant burst of art and culture to Hong Kong with two highly anticipated initiatives. The Hari Art Prize returns for its second year, celebrating the city’s creative talent with applications now open until December 16, 2024. This prestigious prize, in partnership with London’s A Space For Art, invites self-taught artists and recent graduates to showcase their work for a chance to win a HK$100,000 cash award. The winner will be revealed at a special ceremony on March 13, 2025, at The Hari Hong Kong.

Additionally, The Hari Chronicles, a compelling series of art conversations in collaboration with Ben Brown Fine Arts, resumes with two captivating events. On September 26, join Puerto Rican artist Enoc Perez for an intimate discussion moderated by architect Dr. Michael Ng, exploring Perez’s unique take on architecture and its cultural implications. Then, on October 9, delve into the creative journey of Hong Kong-born artist Kitty Chou, as she discusses her “accidental” path to photography with Vogue Hong Kong’s Desiree Au.
