Where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year
Let’s taco about these parties…Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican celebration that commemorates the country’s victory over the French empire. Now, it’s an internationally renowned day celebrated far and wide, spent indulging in Mexican cuisine and drink concoctions. From upscale dishes to hearty Tex-Mex bites, Hong Kong has plenty of spots to choose from. Here are the different fiestas taking place around the city on the 5th of May.

BaseHall vendors have taken inspiration from Mexico and created limited-edition specials for the celebration. Moyo Sik will be topping its fries with kimchi carnitas for a fusion flair, Honbo will be bringing taco elements to its burger and Treehouse will offer a nutritious and flavour-filled wrap with avocado, salsa and chipotle. Top your Cinco de Mayo celebration off with drinks at Pub 1842, which has two specials lined up for the occasion. With Latin tunes from DJ Gia Fu, get ready for an evening of salsa and singing.

Alvy’s
The pizza joint is partnering with 11 Westside for its Cinco de Mayo fiesta. A special goat birria pizza has been curated by chef Samin Dewan, featuring succulent meat that has been braised low and slow. Pair the pie with a zesty michelada shaken up with Young Master’s lager al pastor or the rosé clique cocktail. Churros are the perfect way to end the party, with a bourbon caramel and chocolate orange dipping sauce.

Taqueria Super Macho
This Mexican cantina is ready to celebrate with drinks that won’t hurt your wallet. Grab a margarita for only $48 from 6pm onwards. Make sure to order the off-menu signature special, Chef Billy’s Tijuana-style beef birria taco. Other nibbles include a signature Mexican street corn and a three-cheese quesadilla.

Cali-Mex
Head to any of Cali-Mex’s dine-in locations for free-flow margaritas and Corona beers for two hours. Fill a quesadilla, tacos or Mexican lasagna with grilled chicken, barbacoa beef or baja fish. If you’re looking for a slightly more upscale experience, try its new venue in Fashion Walk, offering new menu additions like table-side guacamole and a range of tacos.

CHINO
This Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant is running its Cinco de Mayo festivities from May 5 to May 9. Its menu will be host to limited edition dishes including a tlayuda (tortilla and toppings) with chorizo and black bean, a wagyu hard-shell taco and a shrimp and clam salsa tostada. Wash the specials down with a watermelon margarita or a Jamaica agua fresca.

Big Sur
Hosting its celebration on the weekend, head to Big Sur on May 8 for its Ocho de Mayo party. Snack on house-made chips and guacamole before tucking into heartier dishes like smoked brisket spring rolls and cochinita pibil tacos. For those who want an extra Mexican flare, add a free-flow drinks package of Ocho tequila cocktails.

Offering special drink deals on May 5 and 6, cheers to Cinco de Mayo at El Macho. Shaking up margaritas for just $68 a glass, the El Macho team will be dressing up to celebrate.
