Interview: Designer Peter Remedios on creating timeless interiors for Four Seasons Hong Kong
As the Design Principal and Managing Director of Remedios Studio, international designer Peter Remedios brings over 30 years of experience and expertise in the fields of high-end hotel and resort design.
Over the years, Remedios has collaborated with some of the world’s most high-profile hotel groups throughout Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East, the US, and Europe, including Aman Resorts, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Shangri-La among others.
As one of the icons in the luxury interior design sector, Remedios is known for his passion for innovation, incredible global design aesthetic and also the personal brand he has created over time. We sat down with Remedios to find out more about his unique approach to interior design and his latest work for Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong.
What is Remedios Studio’s main design mission?
We strive for innovation in our creative designs, perhaps more than any other aspect today. Our studio does not possess a house style but is guided by a holistic design approach that allows each project to develop its own unique personality.
What is the most important element in your design creation?
Storytelling is key and is the starting point for all of our designs. When working on each project, we often begin by creating design stories that reflect the location’s style of architecture, history, and cultural identity, thus creating an appropriate “Sense of Place” in our designs for audiences to immediately connect with the project concept.
What is the design concept for the renovation project at Four Seasons Hong Kong?
The design concept largely grew out of the rich heritage and history of Hong Kong. We wanted to create a refined and timeless design by connecting the old with the new. The redesigned lift lobby and the 399 guest rooms and suites at Four Seasons Hong Kong are adorned with Chinese-inspired elements and modern furnishings for a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance. Abiding to the hotel’s design ethos, our design concept for this project not only accentuates the city’s unique traditions and rich culture but also enlivens the Four Seasons brand concept and reflects a heightened level of deluxe comfort. Our goal is to create an approachable luxurious environment that offers the hotel guests a home away from home and a haven from the busy city.
What are some key features of the suites?
The suites were designed with an impeccably detailed interior, utilising custom furniture and wall finishes. You will find a palette of black, grey and cream, with accents of warm neutrals detailing flowing throughout the space. Different elegant statement pieces and specialty materials were used to connect the space to the desired “approachable luxury” experience. The modern furnishings in the suites provide a contemporary contrast to the Chinese-inspired elements and are a common thread throughout the suites, while the sophisticated interiors compliment the panoramic views of the Victoria Harbour to create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Overall, we have created an ambiance in the suites that is luxurious yet relaxed, one that will stand the test of time.
