Bridging cultures through art: CDNIS and KYP celebrate a dynamic exchange

In a vibrant display of creativity and connection, the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) recently welcomed the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) for a week-long cultural exchange from October 14 to 18. This initiative, designed to foster global understanding through the arts, turned the school into a lively hub of South African culture, sparking curiosity and admiration among students and staff alike.

At the heart of this inspiring collaboration was Thulani Madondo, co-founder of KYP and a celebrated CNN Hero of 2012. Accompanied by a team of dedicated KYP staff and four talented young performers from South Africa, Thulani brought a contagious passion for youth empowerment and community engagement that resonated deeply with CDNIS students.

Throughout the week, students dove headfirst into a series of engaging workshops, exploring gumboots and African Fusion Dance, as well as the expressive art of Forum Theatre. These sessions were not just lessons in rhythm and movement; they were gateways to understanding the rich cultural tapestry of South Africa. The excitement culminated in a captivating performance on October 18 at the Leo Lee Arts Centre, where CDNIS students from Grades 2 and 4 took to the stage, showcasing their newfound skills alongside their KYP friends. The air was filled with the energy of collaboration as students exchanged heartfelt letters and created art together, forging connections that went beyond words.

Reflecting on the experience, Thulani Madondo expressed his appreciation for the CDNIS community. “We were so moved by the open-hearted students and the curiosity we experienced from staff and students alike,” he remarked. “This was the most memorable school experience we have ever had since we started touring 12 years ago!” His words highlighted the profound impact of this cultural exchange, not only on the visiting South African team but also on the CDNIS students, who left with a broader perspective on the world.

The Kliptown Youth Program is more than just a cultural ambassador; it is a lifeline for youth in one of Johannesburg’s most under-resourced communities. KYP focuses on empowering young people by nurturing their dreams and instilling hope for a better future. This cultural exchange served as a platform for CDNIS students to engage with South African culture and, in doing so, deepen their understanding of global citizenship.

At CDNIS, fostering an inclusive and globally minded learning environment is key to its mission. The school emphasises academic excellence, creativity, and cultural diversity, aiming to equip students with the skills and compassion needed to thrive in a multicultural world.

As the week drew to a close, the smiles on students’ faces and the sounds of laughter echoed through the halls, a testament to the friendships formed and the lessons learned. The cultural exchange between CDNIS and KYP was not just a celebration of art; it was a reminder of the shared humanity that connects us all, no matter where we come from.
